Traveling to the US?

What you need to know

Your dog must be 6+ months of age

Have a valid ISO-compliant microchip

For the Rabies vaccination to be valid it must be given after an ISO-compliant microchip has been administered. There is a mandatory waiting period of 28 days before traveling to the US IF the microchip had NOT been implanted prior to the Rabies vaccine being given. At this time you must make sure the Rabies vaccinations are boostered at the appropriate time.
i.e., if the rabies vaccine is due July 3rd for the 3 year term it must be given on this day or before. If July 4th or after the Rabies will only be valid for 1 yr.

Your veterinarian must deem your dog healthy and have been examined within the calendar year (minimum 6 months -12 months proof of being in Canada – details below)

You will need a CDC Dog Import Receipt - This form can be found on the CDC website and submitted electronically. www.cdc.gov

There is no fee

Valid for multiple entries up to 6 months, unless your pet has traveled the a high risk country in the last 6 months. The list can be found on the CDC website

Can be filled out on the day of travel, recommended to fill out a few weeks before travel

CDC Dog Import Form receipt can be printed or shown on a phone screen to U.S. customs officials or airlines (if applicable).

Attach a photo of the dog showing its face and body (see example below). Only .jpg, .jpeg, or .png files are accepted. Maximum file size is 1mb. If your file is larger than 1mb or in a different format, you must save the file as one of the acceptable file types and reduce the file size. Dogs less than one year old should have this photo taken within 15 days before they will arrive in the United States.

Your dog must Appear healthy upon arrival at the border

Documentation showing you dog has been in Canada in the last 6 – 12 months. This includes invoices, vaccine certificates, health certificates, purchase records. If you have kept up your yearly examination with a Canadian veterinary clinic this will not be an issue.
The CDC’s new entry requirements do not apply to cats
If you plan to fly into the US CATS & DOGS must have an Airwaybill (AWB)
Some States will have their own requirements for cats and dogs entering, this must be looked into before your travels
